After he suggests that they end their quarrel, he asks Georg to be his friend. As fate has it, the two men are poised to kill each other, but they hesitate: Both men spoke with the bitterness of possible defeat before them, for each knew that it might be long before his men would seek him out or find him; it was a bare matter of chance which party would arrive first on the scene.
As boys, they despised each other, and by the evening that the story takes place, the two grown men are determined to bring a final end to the feud by killing their enemy. In the ongoing feud over possession of this strip of land, both the Gradwitz and Znaeym families have attempted to assert authority where they have no right to do so.
On this particular night, both Ulrich and Georg, assisted by their retainers and huntsmen, have come out onto the land. Georg Znaeym Georg Znaeym comes from a line of small landowners who have refused to accept the judgement of the courts regarding a disputed piece of land.
Another battle at Verdun lasted for ten months. The tricky plot twists do not stop there. Meanwhile, Ulrich wastes valuable hunting time stalking this parcel of land looking for Georg. At the time that Saki wrote the story, he was serving as a soldier in World War I, a conflict that developed out of inherited ethnic conflicts surrounding land claims that were unable to be satisfied by arbitrary judicial decisions.
On November 11,an armistice was signed ending World War I. Despite actively placing themselves in these roles, the men are aware of the perversity of the situation. Saki went to Burma in as a police officer. The hatred that each man feels for the other represents larger instances of animosity.
The conversation they share is plain, given the circumstances, and the two men, with their unremarkable dialogue, become practically interchangeable. In the war in the west and the war at sea had reached a stalemate. At the same time, the Central Powers were crumbling. The story deepens as it begins to address human frailty and a challenging moral puzzle.
Fewer people had servants, poorer people had access to the same goods as the wealthy, and the middle-class came to hold greater political power. This motif is repeated in two different ways.
